Course Supervisor

Kay Schaefer, born in 1960, is a consultant in tropical medicine and travelers’ health in Cologne, Germany. He holds an M.D. (University of Berlin), a Ph.D. (University of Amsterdam), an MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and a DTM&H (University of London). He has lived for many years in East Africa, carrying out clinical work and research on visceral leishmaniasis, malaria and schistosomiasis. His results have been published in internationally recognized journals. He is a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTM&H), the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) and the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM). Between 1995 and 2011 he has organized and supervised 37 TROPMEDEX round-trip training excursions for healthcare professionals to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Since 2004 he has conducted as well exclusive nature and adventure journeys (also for non medics) to Lake Turkana – the cradle of mankind - in the north of Kenya www.turkana-expeditions.com/en/ He is fluent in English, Germany, Italian, French and Kiswahili. In addition he is familiar with the country, people and wildlife of East Africa.
