A CME certificate (60 contact hours on applied clinical tropical medicine and travelers’ health) is given at the end of the course.

Ward rounds

Ward rounds with individual on-site bedside teaching and visits to out-patient clinics are organized in various teaching hospitals and health centers. Participants get hands-on-experience on patients with tropical infectious diseases and discuss the history, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment with experienced physicians from East Africa and Germany. Patients seen by the participants have normally full access to diagnostic microbiology and parasitology, so that diagnosis in most cases is confirmed and not merely presumptive..

Field excursions

Field excursions are carried out to rural areas and research projects, where the entomology, epidemiology, prevention and control of the most important tropical infectious diseases are covered (see itinerary). During ethno-botanical bush walks (e.g. cultivation of Artemisia annua for malaria therapy) and visits to national parks (e.g.antilopes are a reservoir for African trypanosomiasis) the participants explore the rich flora and fauna of East Africa.

Laboratory manuals

Didactic presentation of diagnostic helminthology, protozoology and bacteriology followed by hands-on microscopy of blood (e.g. malaria, lymphatic filariasis, African trypanos- omiasis), stool (e.g. schistosomiasis mansoni, amoebiasis, giardia), urine (e.g. schistosomiasis haematobium) and skin (e.g. onchocerciasis, leprosy).

  Lectures

Powerpoint-presentations in English are given prior to ward rounds, out-patient clinics and laboratory manuals (a CD with all lectures in English is given at the end of the course).
