Kenya 2009


 
During the 2-week long expedition through Kenya participants travel on tarmac roads (approx. 1500 km) in a comfortable 4 x 4 vehicle with an experienced English speaking driver. The section Nairobi – Mombasa – Nairobi (approx. 1200 km) is by air.


The itinerary

Nairobi – Lake Baringo – Kakamega rainforest – Kisumu – Lake Victoria – Lake Naivasha – Nairobi – Mombasa – Diani Beach – Mombasa – Nairobi.

Field excursions

1.
Prevention and control strategies for visceral leishmaniasis in Baringo District.
2.
Bush-walk through Kakamega rainforest: malaria and the use of traditional medicine (e.g. Artemisia annua) in the indigenous population.
3.
Walk along the shoreline of Lake Victoria near Kisumu: schistosomiasis – Prevention and control strategies in a fishing village and inspection of the habitat of fresh water snails.
4.
Prevention and control strategies of Rift Valley fever near Naivasha.
5.
Entomological control strategies for lymphatic filariasis near Msambweni.
6.
Prevention (the use of impregnated bednets) and control strategies (destruction of Anopheles mosquitos breeding sites) for malaria in the hinterland of Diani Beach.
 
7.
Distribution of Dengue fever on the Kenyan Coast: Inspection of an ongoing sero-epidemiological study near Mombasa.

The itinerary

Entebbe – Kampala – Jinja – Kampala – Mbarara – Queen Elisabeth National Park – Fort Portal – Kampala – Entebbe.

Field excursions

1.
Guided bush-walk in Mabira Rain Forest. Habitat of antelopes – reservoir of African trypanosomiasis.
2.
Prevention and control strategies (trapping of Tse-Tse flies) of African trypanosomiasis in a rural area in Buikwe.
3.
Guided ethno-botanic bush-walk in Lake Mburo National Park. 3.The use of traditional medicine in the treatment of diarrhoeal infections in the African population.
4.
Prevention and control strategies in a malaria project in a rural area in Bushenyi: distribution of impregnated bednets to the local communities and eradication of Anopheles mosquito breeding sites
5.
Guided ornithological bush-walk in Queen Elisabeth National Park. Bird flu – the risk of transmission within the human population.
 
6.
Boat-trip on the Kazinga Channel. Schistosomiasis – prevention and control in a fishing village and inspection of the habitat of fresh water snails (reservoir).
7.
Prevention and control strategies in an onchocerciasis project in Bigodi Forest near Fort Portal.
