Kay Schaefer
 
Kay Schaefer was born in 1960 in Cologne, Germany. He holds an M.D. (University of Berlin), a Ph.D. (University of Amsterdam), an MSc in Clinical Tropical Medicine (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) and a DTM&H (University of London). He is a consultant in tropical medicine and travelers’ health in Cologne, Germany and a guest lecturer at the University of Mbarara, Uganda. He has lived for many years in East Africa, carrying out research on visceral leishmaniasis and malaria. His results have been published in internationally recognized journals (see below). He is a member of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (ASTM&H), the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM) and the Wilderness Medical Society (WMS). In 1995 he started organizing Tropical Medicine Expeditions for healthcare professionals in East Africa and since then has supervised 29 Clinical Training Courses to Uganda and Kenya.
Since 2004 he organizes as well Wilderness Expeditions to Lake Turkana, the “cradle of mankind” between southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. He is fluent in German, English, Italian, French and Kiswahili. In addition he is familiar with the country, people and wildlife of East Africa.
