TRAVEL PREPARATION


Immigration

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. Keep copies of the relevant pages of your passport separately. A tourist visa (single entry, 1 month duration) can be obtained at all International airports on arrival in East Africa. The visa fee is 25.- US$ for Kenya and 50.- US$ for Uganda and Tanzania respectively (State 2010).
 
Health

You should be in good health and reasonably fit. It is necessary to be vaccinated against yellow fever. It is highly recommended to be vaccinated against polio, diphtheria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A and to take malaria prophylaxis (recommended: Malarone or Doxycycline). Check www.cdc.gov/travel/eafrica.htm Carry essential medicine with you, and if you like, bring antibiotics, syringes, gloves etc., which are always in need in East African hospitals! If asked at the customs on arrival, explain that the medicines are for “private use”.


Luggage

Travelling light is essential. Recommended: light trousers, jeans, shorts/skirt, shirts, light sweater, light impermeable wind jacket, comfortable sport shoes with proper soles, slippers, bathing suit, hat, sunglasses, sun cream, mosquito repellent, light rucksack, flashlight, universal power adapter, alarm clock. You don't need a mosquito net, white coat or stethoscope.
Luggage should be packed in a soft, lockable travel bag (not bulky suitcase). Maximum luggage weight is 12 kg per person.



Money

It is recommended to carry approximately US$ 400,- cash (bills dated after 2002) for meals, drinks, tips and personal expenses. It is advised to change money on arrival in East Africa. With your VISA-credit card (others are less popular) you can pay bills and withdraw cash from ATM-machines in East Africa.


Insurance

You should have your own comprehensive travel insurance (health, accident, baggage, cancellation etc.). Check for example www.worldnomads.com

Nairobi (Kenya) and Entebbe (Uganda) can be reached by: KLM via Amsterdam, British Airways via London, BrusselsAir via Brussels, Swiss via Zürich, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Abeba and Emirates via Dubai.
Tanzania   The trip starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) which lies between Arusha and Moshi and ends in Dar es Salaam International Airport. Please book as follows:

20th February 2011:
KLM (KL 0567) Departure: 11.05 Amsterdam, Arrival: 21.30 KIA
5th March 2011:
KLM (KL 0569) Departure: 00.45 Dar es Salaam, Arrival: 08.10 Amsterdam

The course is tailored to the above stated KLM arrival- and departure time.

Other airlines to Dar es Saalam: with British Airways (via London), Swiss (via Zürich und Nairobi), Emirates (via Dubai), Qatar Airways (via Doha) or Ethiopian Airlines (via Addis Abeba). In that case you need to book a one-way flight from Dar es Saalam to KIA or Arusha airport.


Airport transfer

Kenya  
A free taxi airport transfer (approx. 20 km) is provided from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the Fairview Hotel, (www.fairviewkenya.com) in the city center of Nairobi. The taxi driver from Fairview hotel waits for you in the arrival area of the airport building holding a blackboard with your name. The transfer takes about 30 – 90 minutes, depending on the traffic.
Uganda  
A free taxi airport transfer (40 km) is provided from Entebbe International Airport to Cassia Lodge (www.cassialodge.com) near Kampala. Your taxi driver from Cassia Lodge waits for you in the arrival area of the airport building holding a blackboard with your name. The transfer takes about 60 minutes, depending on the traffic.

Tanzania  
A free airport shuttle with Leopard Tours is provided from KIA to the Arusha Coffee Lodge in Arusha (40 km) (www.elewana.com) The bus driver from Leopards Tours will wait for you in the arrival hall of the airport building holding a blackboar with your name. The transfer takes about 45 minutes, depending on the traffic.


Note: Please inform Kay Schaefer in due time about your date and time of arrival in East Africa. (At least two months in advance!)

Kenya  
After the course you can climb Mt. Kenya, do game drives in the Maasai Mara National Park or spend relaxing days on the Indian Ocean beaches in Lamu, Malindi or Mombasa.
